Small In Size, Large In Impact…This Bookcase Goes From Average to Art Furniture
I saw this bookcase at a thrift store and it was absolutely unremarkable. The top veneer was lifting and it was covered in scratches but it “spoke” to me. I loved the smaller size as it would work well as a bedside table or as a small piece beside a living room chair and I also appreciated some of the details that made it unique.
As a result, I followed a series of steps to take this piece from ordinary to artistic.
First I glued, clamped filled and sanded.
Next, I underpainted sections with a bit of a brown color and applied chapstick to random areas on the bookcase that would create the chippy paint look in the final distressing.
Then I painted the entire bookcase with two coats of an off white color that I mixed.
Next, I took a sanding block and lightly ran it over the piece allowing the areas with chapstick to lift revealing the chippy paint look.
Then I decoupaged some old book pages on to the top to give the piece a unique presentation.
And I glazed some brown color over the off white paint and the decoupaged pages to further age the piece.
Now the piece is done and so darn cute.
I guess the moral of the story is to look beyond the present, flex those creative muscles and see the possibilities. It just such fun. Thanks for visiting.
Until next time,
Paul
