Something New and Beautiful From Something Old

As a thrifter and as an artist I get a particular thrill when I take an ordinary, “dime a dozen” item and make it into a piece of art. I look for items that have an interesting shape or will serve a particular function to decorate with art. If I find a piece that offers all three of these qualities it is a big score! Cake savers serve this purpose.

The problem with cake savers is the exact same thing that makes them so easy to collect….they are a dime a dozen and can be found everywhere. So, the challenge becomes, how can we take them from ordinary to extraordinary…from average to exceptional? I choose to accomplish this goal with paint and with an artistic eye.

In the following post, I have painted two of these lovely cake servers.

For the first one I decided to do a very French treatment using a slip-slapped background of light greens, yellows and reds with some simple scrolls, birds and flowers.

This cake server is painted in a very high contrast style and is also decorated in a very French style.

Another really attractive look is presented on the next cake server.  This is a very soft painting and is also painted on a very light warm white background.  To keep this painting very soft, I executed most of the painting in wet paint softening the lines of the flowers and leaves.  Low contrast and soft colors was the theme for this cake server.

Both cake savers are for sale on our etsy shop.  We have sold many of these cake savers and they are very popular with our customers.

Which of these two do you like better?  Inquiring minds want to know.

Thanks for visiting. Please stop back again soon,

Paul
