Our Beloved Pet, Casey
We entered the blog sphere thinking that we would share our passion for furniture upscaling and art furniture with others. We have sanded, painted, caulked, repaired and finished lots of pieces, all the while sharing it with other artists. What we never expected was that we would make friends with people all over the world. It is strange that we feel such a connection with people that we have never met but it has happened and we are so grateful. So I know our friends will understand when I tell you about our recent loss.
Fifteen years ago we decided to take the plunge and get a puppy for our kids. Cathy and I didn’t really want a dog but the kids did and every kid should experience pet ownership, right? So, we researched dog ownership and purchased Casey. He wasn’t the kind of dog that we instantly fell in love with. He was a bit distant and not a very playful puppy. Actually, he was a rather serious dog. But gradually, over time, he worked his way into our hearts and we began to love him, not in spite of his flaws but because of his flaws. Casey was our first dog and we discovered that we are dog people. We added three other dogs to our family but Casey was our first.
This weekend we had to make the heart wrenching decision to put Casey down. He was ready to go but we were not ready to give him up. Our rational minds told us that it was time to let go but it was so very difficult. People that don’t love dogs will never understand but dog people know exactly how we feel. He wasn’t just a pet to us but a living, breathing part of our family. Our lives have been changed by this 17 pound animal and we will miss him so very much but we do know that he is in a better place.
Today as we mourned our loss, a very special friend shared this poem with us. It is such a lovely sentiment that we had to share it with you.
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….
We love you, Casey, and we’ll be together again one day at Rainbow Bridge.
Until next time,
Paul and CathyPosted by admin | 7 comments
